Campus Leaders Academy

The Campus Leaders Academy provided a wealth of information as always.  There are always more great sessions than one person can realistically attend, but one must choose.  Here is a brief summary of what I gained from the sessions I attended.

Opening Keynote-Dr. Gibson

Dr. Gibson shared several things about performance excellence and what that looks like in your organization.  To illustrate his point he provided two quote from Edward Deming that really drive it home.

"Everyone doing his/her best is not the answer."

"Your top 3 employees are probably killing your system."

The first quote could be interpreted a few different ways.  The way I see it, you don't want everyone doing their best, instead you want everyone getting better.  Your best isn't good enough if you best is the same it was ten years ago.

The second quote is a bit of a challenge to the organizational structure.  Instead of all the work being done by a few select people, it needs to be spread out to the rest of the system.  Not doing so feeds some of the "Deadly diseases" he says plague organizations.  Some of those diseases include:

  • Lack of constancy of purpose

  • Emphasis on short-term gain/short-term thinking

  • Merit rating and annual review

  • Lack of trust...and corresponding costs of liability

Power up your PD & Innovative Leadership

This was actually two different sessions, but the ideas overlap for me.  Here is what I gained from the sessions together

  1.  Leverage the things you are already doing, but do them in a new way.  If you are providing newsletters to your stakeholders, do it in a new way.  Get it out there as many ways as possible & provide it in a way where you want all of your stakeholders to be.

  2. Create spaces for your stakeholders to collaborate digitally.  Google Communities allows a common place to share resources.  Whether it is teachers, leaders, or whoever fits for your team.  Provide a safe zone for them to share successes and failures which could be done in a blog that has multiple contributors.

Resistance to Change

The big idea I came away with from this session was that  we need to be limited in order to become limitless.

The Future is Here

Lori Gracey always has an entertaining and fast paced way of delivering her presentations.  This one was no different.  Bottom line from this session, things are moving faster and faster every day.  Despite that we have so many areas of resistance or denial in education.  We cannot have successful students if we do not knock down some of the barriers we have in place.  We also need to move away from the very prescribed way we offer some of our career tech courses.  Instead they need to be much more general in nature to provide our students with the greatest opportunity for future success.  We need to remember that the careers that most of our students will have don't even exist yet.  The vast majority of careers available now, will disappear in a decade.  When machines can replace thousands of jobs in a matter of days, we need to gear our students towards the careers that design, create, code and develop those machines.

When we first start out in education we often think that we know what we're doing. We think that we don't need any help and that everything that we need to know we learned in our education classes. It only takes about three days into the job to realize that our college education did not fully prepare us for every single student that we're going to face. 4 Tools for Creating Instruction Video

Many educators are plunging into creating digital resources as part of their districts plan to continue instruction while school facilities are closed for the remainder of the school year.  If you have not explored this before now, there are several options available to you in a variety of prices and skillset. The tools we suggest will be free or inexpensive and only focus on creating videos that you can share with students later.  There are options for live video conferencing and some of these tools are designed for that, but we are only focusing on video recording.  This type of learning model would best be classified as asynchronous because you are allowing students to work at different times.  This may be the best option since some of your students may have siblings and limited use of technology at their house. Monday Minute for January 14

This morning I wanted to share a quit tip for those struggling integrate technology into the classroom.  It is very basic and should be the mantra of tech in your classroom. Don't let the technology drive the lesson. What I mean is the technology should not be what drives your lesson.  The content should always shine above the tech.  The content should always be your primary focus during instruction.  What do you want the students to learn?  How will you know they have learned it? The tech tool should be as ubiquitous as textbooks, pencil and paper and should be thought of in that manner.  After you decide what you are going to teach, next you decide which tool would be will help you to best accomplish that.
